The Central Cashier accepts payments for registration and other student related fees, transcript and diploma requests, library fines, and most other miscellaneous bills for goods and services. However, payments for Housing contracts and rent, or Parking permits and citations should be directed to the cashiers in those departments, respectively.
At the Central Cashier we think payment taking should be simple and straightforward. We accept the two most common forms of payments - cash and checks (in U.S. funds). Actually the term "checks" is not limited to just personal checks. It also includes money orders, cashier's checks, traveler's checks, loan checks, and international checks.
If you choose to make a payment with a personal check, just be sure it:
Payments that we receive and apply to student and campus department accounts are deposited to the bank the following business day.
Most scholarship checks made payable to a student and UCI are processed through the Financial Aid Office. If you have received a check made payable to you and UCI, bring it to our office and let us look at it. We will be able to tell you if it needs to go through Financial Aid or if we can process it directly for you.
You may wonder, "Why don't they take credit cards?" While some UCI offices can take credit cards (for example, University Extension and the Bookstore), the Central Cashier cannot accept credit cards for the types of payments we take for the campus. Credit card use can be expensive, both for the card-holder (that's you) and the merchant (that's us). Credit card companies charge merchants percentage fees for credit card use and merchants usually must include these fees in their pricing. We are legally prohibited from adding credit card costs to our fees and from passing these costs on to credit card users. Though we understand that using a credit card can be convenient, costs are lower for other methods of payment.
You may be able to obtain an advance against your credit card or use a credit card check, but be certain to ask the cost to you before you decide to take either of these steps. If you find it difficult to make your registration fee payment due to a shortage of funds, we recommend UCI's registration fee installment payment plan known as PACE. It is a simple payment option if your fees can't be paid in one lump sum at the time they are due. The quarterly cost for PACE is $25.00 for California residents and $60.00 for non-residents.
When you come to our office to pay for something, you may wonder why we ask you to also pay other bills that show under your student account number. Before we can accept your payment for services such as registration or transcript requests, we are required to review your account for outstanding debts or holds. Past due debts or holds on your student account must be cleared in order for your payment to be posted, so it's always best to keep your account current to avoid any delays or problems.
When you make a payment to us in person (we highly recommend this if you are paying with cash), be sure to check your receipt for the following before leaving our window:
If you decide to mail your payment, your check serves as your receipt once it has cleared your bank. Never mail cash payments.
Sometimes we may have to return your payment to you. This is not necessarily because we want to (your payments are very important), but because there may be something preventing us from applying it to your account. We may return your payment if:
If you are the account holder and believe we've returned a payment in error, please contact us and we'll be happy to discuss it with you.
We do our best to make it easy for you to make a payment to UCI. We realize it is sometimes difficult for you to visit during our normal Monday through Friday business hours of 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. That is why we extend our hours during peak periods, and we have drop boxes at various locations on campus, including the Administration Building, where you can drop off payments at your convenience. To ensure your payment will reach our office the same day, be sure to check the drop box pick-up times posted on the boxes.
