UCI administers a variety of loan programs for UCI students. UCI is the lender of institutional loans and campus-based federal loans and the originator of Direct Loans from the U.S. Department of Education. Loans are awarded by UCI's Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships as part of a financial aid package which may include federal and nonfederal loans, grants, and scholarships. If your financial aid package includes a loan, this will appear on your offer letter and your will receive promissory notes and other documents which apply to the particular loan program.
The promissory note is the binding legal document you sign when you get a student loan. It lists the conditions under which you're borrowing and the terms under which you agree to pay back the loan. It includes detailed information about your interest rate and payment amounts and about deferment and cancellation provisions. It's very important to read and understand this document before you accept a loan. It's also important to save copies of your promissory notes because you'll need them to refer to later when you begin repaying your loan(s).
For more information about your loan(s), UCI loan programs, promissory notes, and loan repayment contact UCI Loan Services.
Each loan program has a set of guidelines, regulations, or policies that define such things as student eligibility, borrower rights and responsibilities, and repayment terms and conditions. Loans may have different interest rates, payment amounts, deferment and cancellation provisions, and borrower obligations depending on the loan program and when the loan is made.
