Contacts for the Student Loan Interest Deduction

UCI students should direct inquiries regarding the 1098-E (Student Loan Interest Statement) to the appropriate loan servicer.

Your loan servicer is the company or organization that administers and collects loans on behalf of your lender, which may be UC Irvine, the U.S. Department of Education, a bank, or other institution.  If you are unsure about the identity of your loan servicer, check your exit interview materials, loan billing statement, or repayment coupon book.  The name, address, telephone number, and web site of your servicer should appear on this paperwork.

In the event that you cannot locate any of your loan documents, get an online "Financial Aid Review" from the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).  Where applicable, the name, telephone number, and web site of the "Current Servicer" are provided for each loan; otherwise, you will see the lender's contact information.  If assistance from UCI is required, you may email Loan Services at loans@uci.edu or call (949) 824-7081 (Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM only; no services outside stated hours).

You may have more than one student loan, managed by different loan servicers.  Depending on the number of servicers involved, the types of loans you have, and the amount of interest you paid during the tax year, you may not receive any 1098-E forms, or you may receive several.  If you paid less than $600 interest during the tax year, a loan servicer is not required to issue a 1098-E for those payments.  However, if you paid at least $600 to different servicers, each must issue a 1098-E to you.  If your servicer administers loans from different lenders separately, you may receive more than one 1098-E from the same servicer.

Typically, UCI students interact with one or both of the following loan servicers:

Not receiving a 1098-E does not necessarily make you ineligible for a Student Loan Interest Deduction.  You may use the instructions for your federal tax return to figure and claim a benefit, even if your loan servicer did not issue a 1098-E to you.  For more information, see the instructions for Form 1040 or the instructions Form 1040A, and refer to Chapter 4 in Publication 970: Tax Benefits for Education.

UCI and loan servicing staff are unable to provide you, or your designated representative, with individual income tax advice.  Please contact the Internal Revenue Service (800) 829-1040 or your personal tax advisor for help preparing your tax return.  For free tax assistance, visit the IRS web site, contact your local IRS office in California, or locate a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) site in your area.
