What is a Health Insurance Waiver?

Registration fees at UCI include a mandatory health insurance fee that is assessed to every student. 

If you have personal health insurance coverage that is equal to, or exceeds coverage provided by UCI, you may apply for a health insurance premium waiver from one of the following sites:

Students are advised to apply for and confirm the receipt of a health insurance waiver prior to paying Fall quarter registration fees, as credit may not be given retroactively.   Application deadlines vary with enrollment dates (which differ for medical students versus other students) and with the program (USHIP versus GSHIP).  To confirm the receipt of a waiver before paying fees, check your ZOTAccount Online.

If you gamble that the waiver will be granted, and deduct the health insurance fee from your payment without confirmation, you risk having your classes dropped, as your registration fees may remain unpaid.  If granted, the waiver is valid for the entire school year and does not require quarterly renewal.  Additional restrictions apply, so be sure to read the instructions for your program carefully.

Health Insurance Waivers and Your PACE Agreement

Transferring Your Health Insurance Waiver

Both USHIP and GSHIP waivers appear as credits on your ZOTBill. They never appear on your PACE agreement (sometimes causing concern for participants). Don't worry--you didn't lose your waiver just because you applied for PACE. Remember that PACE is an optional fee payment plan, so it would be inappropriate for us to grab the credit from your waiver up front. After all, you might change your mind before submitting the first payment and end up not using PACE at all.

If you activate your PACE agreement, then the waiver credit will be transferred from your ZOTBill to PACE.  You may view "Registration Fees" on ZOTAccount Online to verify the transactions involved.  After your registration fees have been paid by PACE, the waiver credit will be adjusted out of your ZOTAccount to apply to PACE, as shown in the shaded areas below:

In this example, the USHIP waiver credit in the amount of $235.50 was transferred to PACE on 09/16/2005.  Note that this transaction took place only after registration fees were paid in full by PACE.  Waivers never appear on your PACE agreement up front because PACE is an optional fee payment plan.

Paying Your PACE Agreement Balance

Since you have already made the first PACE payment, we can't apply the health insurance waiver credit to that installment (PACE #1) up front.  Instead we work from the "back end" of your agreement, applying the credit to the third installment (PACE #3) instead.  Typically, transferring the credit will be completed before the last installment is due, so you should see the new balance for PACE #3 on QuickSearch, as well as on at least one of the two reminder statements mailed to you.

Suppose your registration fees are $2491.50 and you have a USHIP waiver credit in the amount of $235.00.  Your PACE agreement indicates that your three monthly installment payments are $854.50 (PACE #1), $831.00 (PACE #2), and $831.00 (PACE #3).  After you pay PACE #1, the program pays your registration fees in full and your waiver credit is transferred from your ZOTAccount to PACE.  You still owe $831.00 for PACE #2, but the balance for PACE #3 is reduced to $596.00 ($831.00 - 235.00).

It is important to realize that we can't reissue your PACE agreement after the health insurance waiver has been applied. The due dates for both installments remain the 10th of each month following the registration fee payment deadline.  The balance for PACE #2 probably won't change at all, so you should plan to pay the full amount printed on your agreement.  The balance for PACE #3 will be reduced, so you can look forward to a smaller payment at the end of the plan.

In this example, QuickSearch shows two outstanding PACE installments.  The balance for PACE #2 is unchanged at $831.00, but the balance for PACE #3 has been reduced to $596.00 ($831.00 - 235.00) with the credit of the health insurance waiver.  The due dates for both installments remain the 10th of each month following the registration fee payment deadline.  PACE #2 must be paid in full in the amount of $831.00 to release the AR/C hold on student records.  The health insurance waiver cannot be used to credit PACE #2.

If you have made payments such that the waiver credit exceeds your PACE balance, then the overage will be applied to any of your other outstanding debts.
